CEO Tim Sinks Celebrates 25 Years of Service with MassMutual

This November, Capital Financial Group’s own CEO Tim Sinks celebrated his silver jubilee with our parent firm, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). Our Marketing & Recruiting Manager sat down with Tim for a brief interview on how he has seen the world change and develop during his tenure as a Financial professional.

What made you choose a career in Financial Services?

I was 28 years old and married with two kids. I worked for the family business for 7 and a half years out of college and realized I wasn’t happy and wanted to make a change - I thought I wanted to be a stockbroker. So I pursued a career in the stockbroker world and while I was interviewing with firms, I came to realize that what I really wanted to do was Financial Planning, which was pretty new at the time.

How have you seen the industry change in the past 25 years?

It’s changed so much. There’s a lot less companies now than there were when I started the business. Most of the companies were mutual companies when I entered the business, but a lot of companies went public. I preferred to stay on the mutual side. When I started, it was mainly just life insurance – all we really did on the investment side was individual stocks and bonds or mutual funds and all of that now has moved over to professional asset management. Asset management and financial planning seems to have served our firm very well.

How has being the CEO of Capital Financial Group changed your life?

That one is hard. It’s changed my life in so many ways. I’ve been allowed to grow and run with Capital Financial Group with the support of MassMutual. They ask that we do it in the vein of upmost compliance and the highest morals. But they don’t lay a heavy hand on me running the company at all – I think that entrepreneurship that they offer has allowed me to become a better business man and better mentor to our advisors. They’ve really allowed us to grow.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in financial planning?

Get a few years of work experience under your belt. See what it’s like to work for someone else before jumping to the realm of being your own boss. Join a firm that does fee-based financial planning – I think that’s absolutely the way of the future. And thirdly, I’d look to see if I could join a team.

What does Capital Financial Group mean to you?

Most days It’s just outright fun. It’s a really joyful position to be CEO of a company in which you feel like you change people’s lives in a positive way. Which is probably why most people get into the business. It’s been a great 25 years representing this firm. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
